Staying Safe on the Way Home |
|
Bullying might be addressed successfully at school but often children feel vulnerable and unprotected on their walk home. Teach students strategies to stay safe.
| 1. | Students need to know that their behaviour on the way home is also a school issue especially when it involves other students from the school. Let them know that consequences for bullying will be the same whether it happens at school or on the way home. |
| 2. | Monitor student behaviour. Address issues during the day rather than let them “blow up” on the way home. |
| 3. | Teach students to walk in a group and let their parents know when they get home. Play "What if" and role play what they might do in a variety of unsafe situations, including bullying. |
| 4. | Have the students map their walk home (or their neighbourhood where they play). Have them note safe places to walk/play, as well as areas that might be unsafe or require extra precaution. |
