Respect and Kindness

Learning to be kind and respectful is just like learning any other skill. You need to practice to get better at it. We often see people who are waiting for the other person to show them respect or kindness before they’ll do the same. Don’t wait! Show respect before you get it. Be kind and thoughtful without being asked. Most of the time you’ll be pleased with the results and perhaps you’ll encourage others to do the same.

 1. Imagine yourself as a kindness secret agent. Try to do something kind for your parents, family and friends every day. Don't get caught! Maybe it's straightening up a room or putting your brother's wet mittens on the heater. Maybe your friend falls and you help them to the office. Once you are used to doing this - start to help people you don't know as well. It might be a classmate, a kid in a younger grade or the crossing guard. You might just smile and say hello or anything positive that might make someone else happier or bring a smile to their face.
 2. Depending on your age, talk to your parents about watching the movie called Pay It Forward. A young boy turns the old revenge statement "I'm going to pay you back for what you did" into a kindness statement “pay it forward” as a way to make the world a better place. It's a sad movie but one that really demonstrates respect and kindness.
