In the Long Run: Alternatives to Street Life

What We Know

Thousands of Canadian children and youth are on the streets of our cities on any given day. Although they may have left home to escape danger, the risk of disease, abuse, injury and criminal involvement often increase on the street. Shame, lack of trust, fear or depression prevents youth from seeking the help they need.

What We Can Do

In the Long Run: Alternatives to Street Life is an interactive CD-ROM that depicts young teens facing "real-life" challenges such as strict rules, academic difficulties, substance abuse, physical or sexual abuse, poverty and bereavement.

By using this resource, children aged 11-14 are encouraged to seek help until they find it. Using live action video, viewers choose one of three scenarios depicting preteen-aged children who consider leaving their homes. Viewers can choose various actions or reactions to the circumstances portrayed and become more aware of the alternative choices available.

A downloadable Facilitator Guide provides lessons, activities and novel studies with links to the following curriculum areas: language arts, health and physical education, dramatic arts and guidance.

Schools are welcome to try our demo CD for a free preview, which is available by request. This demonstration version of the CD shows one of the three scenarios completely, and has introductory explanations for the others. We invite you to try out the demonstration, and feel confident you will immediately perceive its benefit as a valuable educational tool.

Please send your request for our demo CD, including your address, to info@canadiansafeschools.com.

We are offering each In the Long Run package at the price of $120 + GST, which includes a site license and a downloadable facilitator guide.

The CD-ROM is available in PC format.
