The Canadian Safe School Network has developed a number of questionnaires and surveys designed to help you determine areas of need in your school community. Please feel free to use these when designing a safe school plan or to gather information to measure your progress or raise awareness. Please choose one of the following options below:

How Does Your School Compare?

Conduct your own Safety in Schools Survey (see sample surveys in the Survey Section above). Because the questions are the same as those used in a provincial survey, you are able to compare your school’s results with those gathered below.

Elementary results:

In a Safety in Schools Survey conducted by Ontario’s Education Quality Assessment Office, a total of 36,799 elementary school students responded by giving their perceptions of school safety.

    The following percentage of students agreed that the following statements were sometimes or often true:

 18 % agree Someone has threatened to hurt me.
 13 % agree I have been hit with an object or weapon by someone who was trying to hurt me.
 23 % agree I have been slapped, punched, or kicked by someone who was trying to hurt me.
 23 % agree I have been afraid that someone will hurt or bother me at school.
 15 % agree I have been afraid that someone will hurt or bother me on the way to or from school


     The following percentage of students disagreed that the following statements are sometimes or often true:

 33 % disagree There is very little physical fighting at school.
 74% disagree There is very little verbal abuse at school (e.g. name calling, swearing).
 41% disagree There is very little bullying of other students at school.
 20% disagree There is very little discrimination at school
 22% disagree There is very little harassment at school

Secondary results:

In a Safety in Schools Survey conducted by Ontario’s Education Quality Assessment Office, a total of 73,650 secondary school students responded by giving their perceptions of school safety.

    The following percentage of students agreed that the following statements were sometimes or often true:

 15 % agree Someone has threatened to hurt me.
 10 % agree I have been hit with an object or weapon by someone who was trying to hurt me.
 13 % agree I have been slapped, punched, or kicked by someone who was trying to hurt me.
 19 % agree I have been afraid that someone will hurt or bother me at school.
 12 % agree I have been afraid that someone will hurt or bother me on the way to or from school

 40 % disagree There is very little physical fighting at school.
