SNAP® Steps

STOP – “Things I can do to STOP myself from acting without thinking.”
o Snap my fingers
o Take deep breaths
o Put my hands in my pockets
o Take a step back
o Count to ten

NOW, AND – “Things I can say to myself to keep calm and help me to make the right choice.”
o Calming thoughts / coping statements
o “This is hard but I can do it.”
o “I can stay in control.”

PLAN – “Once I have stopped and calmed down what can I do?”
Pick a plan that will work for me, one that will:
o make me feel like a winner
o make the problem smaller not bigger
o not hurt anyone else or myself
