: November 15, 2011       : Dave Fraser

CSSN is pleased to announce another upcoming professional development opportunity!

This informative one-day conference on Friday, November 25th will examine current and emerging legal issues and balancing learning outcomes with today’s reality.

Presenters Include:

Social Media and The Law
Presented by: Eric Roher, Borden Ladner Gervais LLP

Social media has become the centrepiece of student social life. Parents, educators and advocates have grown increasingly concerned about the role of cell phones, text messages, blogs, wikis, websites and social networks in the lives of young adults.

This session will address:
• What is the role and responsibility of Ontario schools and school leaders in responding to off-school conduct?
• What policies and procedures should be put in place?
• In an incident involving social media, at what stage should the school get involved?
• When and how should school administrators undertake an investigation?
• What steps can be taken to teach students and school staff how to manage their electronic reputations?

Special Education: Safety Issues
Presented by: Jennifer Trepanier, Keel Cottrelle LLP

This session will focus on the safety issues relating to special education including:

1. BILL 168: risk of injury, harassment, work refusal
2. EXCLUSIONS: s. 265(1)(m)
3. LOCK-DOWNS: Police Protocol
4. FIRE SAFETY ISSUES
5. FASD TRAINING

"The Restorative Practice Framework" applied to "Assessment of Risk and Threat" and "The Pathway to Violence"
Presented by: Mel Barkwill, Canadian Safe School Network & Detective Tony Whetham, Threat Assessment Coordinator, Durham Regional Police

This presentation will review a continuum of behaviours that typically do warrant a threat assessment to those worrisome behaviours of risk and uncertainty that do not. How does this relate to the Pathway to Violence? What do mental health experts say to watch for? How does the Restorative Practice Framework as a school operating system impact on risks and threats?

Restorative Justice: How It Will Increase Accountability, Reduce Recidivism and Make You Safer.
Presented by: Chief Vern White, Ottawa Police Service

The introduction of Restorative Justice modeling in the workplace is something each of us wrestle with as we attempt to deal with performance/discipline/respectful workplace issues. There is an opportunity to do just that if we embrace the workplace issues from a restorative practices approach. This session will focus on restorative practices and the opportunities to improve relationships and accept responsibility.
